Current Community Project – Angel’s Place

What is Angel’s Place?

Angel’s Place is a safe haven for abused, traumatised, and neglected children. The Haven accommodates six children in fostercare and serves as an emergency place of safety for children in need of care. Angel’s Place functions under the auspices of the Roodepoort Child and Family Welfare Society.

How did Angel’s Place start?

Thousands of South African children are abused or neglected by the very people supposed to love and protect them. These children may only be placed in foster care once a court ruling has been issued. While the legal proceedings are still pending, these children need to be accommodated and cared for in a safe environment. So great is the demand for places of safety for these children, that they are often temporarily housed in police station cells or sent back to the very environment they urgently need to be rescued from. To help provide in this need, Angel’s Place was founded in September 2006 – one of only three safe havens for children on the West Rand. Our aim is to open more homes like Angel’s Place and to start up a feeding scheme for parents with small children.

Our vision

  • To provide a loving, caring home where children are accepted as they are.
  • To help these children feel safe and secure, and to teach them about trust.
  • To develop our children into adults who are able to make a positive difference in their world

What makes Angel’s Place so special?

Angel’s Place is not an institution, but a proper home where children who have been exposed to horrendous circumstances, receive the love, warmth, attention, guidance, and security they need to become whole. The children learn that they matter, that they are special, and that each of them has an important purpose in life. In order that they may learn to fulfil their purpose and potential, they are helped and encouraged to grow and develop spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally and socially. The warm and stable home environment of Angel’s Place furthermore helps them cope with the inevitable trauma accompanying the pending court cases.

Why do we need your support?

Angel’s Place is not subsidised by government in any way and is fully dependent on sponsorships and donations. The running costs per month amount to approximately R25 000. This includes the bond repayment, salaries, food, groceries, and toiletries, but excludes any special treats for the children.

What do we need?

  • Monetary contributions towards household expenses, transport, children’s education, staff salaries, etc.
  • Food
  • Cleaning agents
  • Toiletries
  • Toys and books
  • People prepared to spend time with our children, e.g. to help with homework in the afternoons
