Florida Suburb Information
Florida is blessed with picturesque scenery and is less commercialised than the other suburbs within the greater city of Johannesburg. Top attractions in vicinity of Florida include the likes of the Hartebeespoort Dam, Elandsdrift, and the majestic Magaliesberg Mountains. Popular haunts and must-see activities can be found at the Cradle of Humankind, the Krugersdorp Game Reserve, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, and the Roodepoort Museum. The colorful town of Florida is situated just 10km west of Johannesburg on the West Rand of Gauteng.
Florida is blessed with a terrifically central location, with its main road forming an important coalition of businesses and civic services, along with the likes of Roodepoort and Paardekraal.
Florida was borne out of the gold rush in 1881, and was initially established as a mining camp. One of Florida’s greatest attractions is its local library; reputed to be one of the most extensive facilities of its kind in Johannesburg. The library bears an impressive testament to the history of the suburb as well as the entire region.
Other popular pastimes to pursue include paintball, hot air ballooning, and mountain biking – all in close proximity to Florida.
Florida is home to a number of spectacular entertainment facilities, shopping malls as well as few world class restaurants. The two big shopping malls in the Roodepoort area, Westgate and Clearwater Shopping mall, caters for the affluent community of Florida and its surrounding areas.
Florida Lake caters for weddings, birthdays and other social events. Florida Lake usually hosts events on weekends where they entertain spectators with Dragon Boat racing events, flea markets and so on.
Other attractions near Florida include Zoo Lake. Zoo Lake is very popular hotspot located on the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and West World Street, virtually across from the Johannesburg Zoo. This is the venue for plenty of events such as the annual Jazz on the Lake and Carols by Candle Light.
